I have a set sitting on my shelf in the garage, the Easystart function works great, ended up going with a different motor in the end. They are ES 570's peak at mid range, great for passing on highway, put the 54h cam in which sputters out at 4500 rpm, also had to put in MCR's.
I've built a few motors, and am familiar with, and have triedmany cam grinds. The "short" intake duration and "odd" timing (17/19 with 216 durtion) on the S&S 551's concerned me a bit, but SO many peolpe were having good luck wth them, I tried a set (aganst my better judgement). I thoroughly researched the reliability issue, and could find NO failures of the decompresion heel on the books (S&S claims NO returns as well). I am running them in a 103 with flat tops, at about 9.85 to one. I can idle down mainstreet at 1000 RPM w/out stumbling, hit is, and the power is there right NOW, and pulls well to about 4700. Perfect for a trike or FLHT. I even have high back-pressure BUB 7 Stealth mufflers, and still have decent torque & Hp (they cost me some ponies though). On a 103, you should see well over 80 Hp and close to 100 Ft Lbs (my trike turns 75/93.5 at the posi rear wheels, there a LOT of drag built in). Keep your CR under 10:1 and you will love them.
I installed a set of woods tw555 cams directional lifters and screamin eagle push rods and TTS mastertune, huge improvement over stock. I dont know your situation, but if you can afford cams, big bore and head work at once go for it, if not the cams alone will be a huge difference, and ive seen people use the 555 cams with the big bore kit also.
