Default Steering bearing adjustment

Ok I took my dyna in today for it's 1k service. (only because they threw it in when I bought the bike) I told the service writer that I want to make sure they adjust the steering bearing and he gave me one of those blank stares. He told me we don't do that on the 1k service and pulled out his service check list. It only mentioned it on a springer. So I informed him that it is a required step in the 1K service. I was then asked how I came up with that info and I took out my owners manual and showed him. They agreed to do it and I told him I want it noted in my paperwork when i pick it up.

I'm also having them check the front fork seals as I'm seeing a ring around the fork everytime I ride it. I purposely didn't wipe it off before I took it in.

This will be the last service they do on my bike unless it has a warranty issue.

Have any of you had fork seal issues on your new dyna?

My head bearing was so out of whack the front end clunked, dealer adjusted it on 1k, my seals also looked like they leaked, dealer told me the factory stuffs grease behind the dust covers and it seeps out when they get warm. At first mine really looked bad but stopped after awhile.

My 08 had both fork seals blow out completely at 14K miles. I'm talking about a puddle of oil under each fork. Bike has never been strapped down, abused, or had the front end "bottom out". There was always a little "ring" on the forks after a ride [since it was new, I would just wipe it off], then, one day, "pop", they went out.

ESP picked up the repair bill, but irritating nonetheless.

Wow that sucks. Would be a bummer if you were getting ready to go for a ride and surprise...

It was good of your dealer to make that adjustment. My bike had 400 miles when I bought it and the selling dealer was too far to make it worth the trip for the 1K service. The local dealer I took it to did the adjustment (I didn't ask them to) when they did the service. Then they charged me for it since "adjustments weren't covered under the service". I knew it was BS and I disputed it but ended up paying.

I 1K service should include everything that harley requires for maintenance per your owners manual. I got in a dispute with my local dealer because it wasn't on their "check list" I was prepared and brought my manual with me and showed them and they agreed to do it at no additional charges. Think about all the people that have their 1K service that don't know. Seems like a pretty important part of the service in my eyes.

Who knows how long they use the generic "check list" without updating them. All the more reason to do all the work myself and complete every task required.

That's the problem, "checking" the head bearing is part of the included service. However if it's found that it needs "adjusted" that's an additional charge.

I can't speak for your owners manual on your model, but mine specifically states adjustment, not check
