So I bought these Cycle Visions "Little Lite Brackets" for mounting rear turns to the license plate. Last week one of them breaks. I was able to pull over and remove the blinker to make it home. The next day the other one breaks off and I have no idea where it fell off, other than on the interstate somewhere. I'm really lucky it didn't get caught up in the sprocket or something and cause catastrophic failure!
I contacted Cycle Visions about the situation and they sent me a new set of brackets. I'm kinda leery about putting them back on my ride. It's already cost me one set of Kuryakyn LED turns...I just bought the second set.
Can anyone suggest a way to strengthen the brackets so they won't break off again? Is there something I can coat them with? JB Weld or something?
Those right angle brackets *should* be sufficient to hold a turn signal. It looks like the damaged piece broke at the thinnest cross section at the bolted connection. What may have happened is that you really torqued down on that joint, creating excessive stress that was above the yield strength, and ultimately the ultimate strength of the sheet material. When you put the new ones on, use some blue loctite and only torque enough to create a firm joint, and use a lock washer if you have one. Do not over-torque. Good luck.
