I have a detachable HD windshield I have used once - Sturgis 2008 trip - and now find myself riding to work and back later and later into the fall.
Against my usual "form over function" mode of operation, I installed it last night in hopes I can stay a bit more comfortable on the cold rides in at 0-dark-thirty.
The ride in this morning was a bit easier on the wind, but there is a space between the upper portion of the shield and the headlight - and wind sprays directly at my lower face.
What have any of you done - if anything - to close that gap. A windshield bag like usually seen for sunglasses on the fairing of a Street Glide?
I tied a bandanna around the mounting brackets of my detachable windshield ( see attachment ) and it help quite a bit.
Disclaimer; didn't say it was pretty.
I put a toolbag on my risers. That not only cuts down on the wind, but it also stops the glare that was bouncing off the chrome risers onto the windshield.
I have the Quick-Release Super Sport Windshield on my 2007 FXDC and have a tool bag between the handle bars and windshield. I don't seem to have much wind coming past the tool bag, but I have a great deal of wind coming up from the bottom of the windshield. Drives me crazy, especially with a full faced helmet on. Have not been able to solve the problem. Considering a Jacks Flaps Vest or the Memphis Shades Bat Wing as a solution.
I played around with this problem for quite a while. First of all, lower the windshield as tight to the headlight as you can. My HD QD fork mounted shields allow about 1-1/2" of up and down adjustment.
Next, tilt the windshield forward. My HD mounts have slotted top mounts giving me about 1/2" of tilt at the mounts, this will move the top of the windshield forward up to 2.5".
This free and simple change solved about all of my problems. I'm good from 0 to 120 MPH with no problems. Once in a while a cross wind will create some turbulence, not often, though I do live in a windy area.
I'm now okay with running half, 3/4 and full helmets.
