Honestly there is alot of tread left there I think it might be the dirt on the tire throwing you off. I worked in a tire shop for about 5 years when I was younger and I honestly just can't figure this dilema out my tire is at worst at half wear.
Well,.... if you say so,... It is hard to tell for sure from that pic, but it sure looks like it would fail my inspection if I stopped you, and I have been a police officer for 14 years. Bottom line is if you feel safe and it looks safe to you then by all means ride it. Here is a pic of a brand new tire with 10 miles on it.

Cowboy,
Please keep us posted on your tire wear mileage. I think someone else posted 12 or 14K miles, and I think I accused them of pushing the damn thing around to get that kind of wear.
Funny you say that we do the same thing for a living. I'm a Military Police Canine Explosive Dog Handler and I promise you its good I just had warrenty work done at Harley and even they said it was wearing good. I want it to wear out so I can have an excuse to put a bigger one on there lol but at the same time I just couldn't go out in the yard and burn it off and get away with it. Wife frowns on sich things lol.
I'm pretty easy on my tire and only got 7,700 miles out of mine. If you ride hard it wears fast. If you go with a better performance tire it will probably wear just as fast because the compound is softer. I went with a dunlop d205, 160 70 17 which is a crotch rocket touring tire. It's z rated and a radial, and made a HUGE difference around corners, and only cost $107 mounted and balanced at the crotch rocket shop.
Jim, how do you like this tire? Anything has to be an improvement over the junk K591 stock tire! You got one hell 'ov a deal for $107.00, the cheapest I've found on the net is $117.00 with shipping. Tim
I have put about 1,000 miles on the D205 so far, and i love it. It took a about 20 miles or so to get used to the handling. This tire looks very similar to the Metzeler me880, but is cheaper, is a radial and z rated. The bike leans itself into the corners now instead of fighting against you. The traction is excellent also, i got cought in the rain reciently and had to ride about 30 miles in the pouring rain and the bike felt exactally the same in the rain as it did dry. I was going about 75-80 and felt very comfortable. I went with the crotch rocket tire because it was significantly cheaper and was a higher rated tire them stock, and since it's more of a sport bike tire, i figured my bike would handle better on the mountiain raods that i ride on a lot.
I bought the tire from Cal Coast Motorsports in Ventura, ca. It was $99.99 plus tax, and the install and balance the tire for from when you buy from them as long as you take off your wheel and bring it in loose.
Jim, thank you for the report. I'm definately going to go with this compound. I absolutely can not stand the way the K591 handles, especially in the twisties. Oh, and don't go as far as saying it's a "Crotch Rocket" tire, HD uses it on the Buells. Thanks again. Timmer
man i can`t believe you guys are only getting 7000 miles and less, i have a 05 wideglide that i ride hard but no burnouts, and i have 10,000 miles and i bet i have another 5or 6 thou left, on the front it looks even better, obviously i think highly of the dunlop, i do check air pressure weekly and adjust accordingly
