Can you not just go by feel? Good grief...

I'd go nuts if I had to think about rpm's on a Harley for when to shift. The only possible reason I can think of to have a tach on a Harley is if you have a real hi-po and want to keep it below redline. If it's winding tight, shift up. If it's starting to lug, shift down.

It's not like you can tape a chart to your bars or anything.

I do go by shift by feel and that's what bothers me reading how I should change my way of shifting.
When it lugs I downshift and shifting into sixth at 50 -55 didn't lug even sudden acceleration to pass it was not lugging, climbing hills ect..
But I hear that it will hurt the engine shifting when I do and having some sort of shifting band to follow would help, that's all.
The Xied's changed the whole low end on the bike and it has great low end torque.
I don't think it bothers it to shift at lower r's but I may be wrong.
I (feel) the shift and engine are fine. But is it?

Sixth gear at 50-55 mph? Bet that sounds like hell.

You guys who are commenting do you run the Xied"s and feel the difference on the low end.
Am I not the only one who feels the difference?

Not trying to slam you but if you can't tell that you are lugging 6th at 50-55 you do not understand what lugging is. My 5 speed with a 31good tooth front is borderline at 50-55. That is the slowest I will shift to 5th.

I also feel the difference in lower RPM with my Xied's. My manual for my 2011 Super Glide on page 73 has an up shift chart (table 18). Here it is: First to second 15, second to third 25, Third to fourth 36, Fourth to fifth 45, Fifth to sixth 55 These speeds/rpms put me cruising at around 2200 rpm. I am just not feeling any lugging. I have driven 6 speed stick shift performance cars for the past 20 years so I think I know what lugging is. I have a Tach and I shift while cruising at about 3K RPM. The roads down here are flat, not many hills. I shift into 6th at over 55 also just as the manual states. Just sounds like the engine needs to be shifted to me. Generally I shift at about 3000 rpms. To me if it is not straining (that jerking motion) it's not lugging. You guys that are cruising at higher rpms are just wasting fuel and putting more wear on the engine. The manual further states while breaking in (500 miles) to keep it under 3500 rpm. If that is what they want for break in that should tell you something.

Ideally you should be cruising in the 2500-2800 range. You should feel it much smoother at 2700.

I have the XEID's and even though the motor will still pull you at 55 in 6th you don't want to do it, you are still lugging the motor. Not only is it bad for your motor (much worse then running it to redline) but it is also dangerous because if you need to get out of the way in a hurry you want as much torque that is possible. The slowest I go in 6th gear is 65 on flat ground and I feel that is borderline. 70+ with XEID's is ideal.

Harley told me the worse thing you can do to the motor is lugging it. It doesn't have to ping or jerk. Like I say if you are in a gear that won't jerk you back when you hit the throttle, you are lugging it...

Wrong! As stated above read the manual.
