For those of you that have made rear fender swaps or mods to the 06' and newer Dyna's (Super Glide, Street Bob, Super Glide Customs.......not the wider rear ended ones).
Can you tell me what width fender I should be looking for to start my new fender swap? I want to keep everything at the stock width, just want to go for a different look.
Will an 8.25" fender width work, or is it to wide or to thin.

8.25 is not too thin, but may require a small spacer or two. I can't remember exactly but it may be around 8 3/4 between the rear mounting holes and 9 inches between the front. The "FL Dyna" Interest Group should have the measurements in there somewhere.
Klockwerks sells a fender that is in the Drag Book (page 1052) that measures 8.25". This fender is for early model Dressers that have the 180 tire kit on them. They also have this same fender in a width of 8.625".
The reason why I ask though is because I somewhat remember reading somewhere in the Dyna form that someone had a 8.5" fender that he had to narrow to get it to wok on his bike, but I don't remember what year Dyna he did this on.
Do you have a link to the group you are talking about?

My '07 FXD's rear fender was 8.25" wide between the struts, that is the measurement you need. I bought a Jesse James WCC 8.5" roller rear fender and had to narrow it to 8.25".
I wanted the round cross section instead of the stepped cross section of the stock fenders, so had to make my own. Then I also had to re-radius it's overall length and re-radius the wheel openings, make the cut-out for the belt, and reinforce the seat areas and cut and/or drill for mounting and wiring holes. Lots of work, but I do know that it is 8-1/4" wide!

I just threw a tape across the bottom of my original (06 FXDCI) and it was just under 8 1/2 but I think they flare out some below the struts. Attachment 208107
Yup, they are 8.25". Trust me on this one!!! I didn't spend 40 to 60 hours building, smoothing and painting a fender without measuring and remeasuring, mocking up and trial fitting to make things perfect.
My newly built fender slid in just like the stock one and used the same fasteners and washers. It also accepted my previous hard mounted sissy bar bracket, it was an exact fit.
I did start with a thin 18 ga fender blank (8.5"W) that I had to narrow and heavily modify and I don't recommend for anyone else to do this!
What I'm trying to do is just tell others to find an 8.25" wide rear fender to begin with. I tried to find one, but they weren't what I wanted. I had my mind set on frenching in the license plate and needed a half-round cross-section to make it fit.
Good luck on finding sites that actually list the widths, perhaps you will need to cross reference them and go with factory offerings.
I have no doubt the 8 1/4 is spot on, my tape shows 8 3/8 but it looks like it tapers in towards the top. I was able to slip a Street Glide fender between my struts and it was a bit wider but if I were looking I'd stay as close to the 8 1/4 as possible.
