My first oil change. Bought used, when I'd check oil before it would be at the full mark when checked cold so I thought it had too much in it from previous owner.i drained it and changed filter per the service manual. It says put 2 1/2qarts and it should come half way to full.after 2qts I screwed the dip stick all the way in and it's on full... There's no way all of the oil didn't drain. It's level and on the jiffy stand.
I am not sure what to tell you I guess it could be possible that a 1/2 quart oil did not drain. Not sure if you did or not but change the oil when the bike is warm so the oil flows out easier otherwise I could see that much being left behind. If it were me I would leave it where it is take it for a short cruise come back check it again. Did you start the engine yet? Oil will fill into the filter as well and drop the level.
2 1/2 with filter cause some doesn't drain out and you don't screw in the fill cap. Just put it in then remove. Not more than 2 1/2 unless you want oil coming out your breather.
Manual says on both cold and warm engine "reinstall filler cap. Turn filler cap clockwise until it stops."
Yes I rode it about 5 miles then drained til I got an occasional drip. I filled the filter about half way before installing. It says use cold check procedure after oil change then crank it for a few then use warm check procedure. I'm about to run down the road and back then check it again. I remember reading another post about this same issue a while back.
Only time you use 3 is when the engine has been apart.
2 1/2 tops.
Good idea to fill the filter half way.
Let it drain a bit hot.
For me I disconnect the oil cooler and drain the lines and let it sit for a couple beers.
Even with the oil cooler I never add more than 2 1/2quarts.
You can never get ALL the oil out. There are nooks and crannys where oil remains and an oil film stays on every metal surface in the motor (its suppposed to do that) so its easy to eat up a half quart.
i let it run for a few min and rechecked it and it was a about half way, added more till it was at full, rode it around the yard and checked again and it was still on full so it should be right. gonna go riding tomorrow. i'll go a few miles and check it on side of the road. thanks for the help! very easy job other than this issue.
Thats no issue completely normal glad you gotter figured out. Plus you gotta remember if you filled your filter and added 2 quarts and it said full your prob not far of being you probably put 1/4 quart in filter. From now on just put 2.5 in the hole don't fill filter as its not necc and your golden.
You should not drain the oil while on the jiffy stand. It needs to be upright to get the most oil out. If you can't do this just change the oil at sooner intervals.
