do you have an opinion or advice for me here.
my 006 FXD has decided to give me a new project.
dangerous situation when the ignition wants to turn off at random times.
the switch has been acting up for a while and now is totally unacceptable.
I am no where near an electrical engineer so here's my main question.
if I eliminate the HD ignition assembly will a relay be needed??
all I want now is a toggle switch.
I have never locked the forks on this machine in six years
I have never turned the switch to the accessory position.
so there are only two wires to deal with.
relay - yes no other??

I dont have my 06 FXD service manual anymore but from my memory this is what I recall.
The factory ignition switch doesnt carry the amp load nor does the starter button on the handlebars. If you will post a link to or scan the wiring schematic I am sure one of us can get you up and running. So I am thinking that no relay would be needed for your idea.
Again I am running from memory and may be wrong here. If I am wrong someone please correct me.
To take this one step further I recall a ignition switch that mounted where the horn goes that had all functions including the start button function just like a car switch does.
That particular unit was designed for choppers and did carry the load and had a built in relay I believe. They may make that setup without a built in relay for bikes that have a remote starter relay

I'd ohm out the switch first w/ a multimeter to see if it is the real culprit.
Good luck.
Thats what I see from the wiring schematic Artlee posted as well.
No relay needed. I would check the accessory wire for voltage when turned in the on position and if its hot then those two need connected together. (key on and accessory)
If the accessory does not show voltage when keyed on then you could use a two wire setup although I doubt this is the case just like Spanner said.
I like the idea of a toggle switch as well. The neck mounted ignition switch makes rolling out fast near impossible. That is if it doesnt spit your key out on the ground.

To determine the amount of current in the ignition switch you could use a multi meter.
Funny to find the wiring diagrams from my ***Dyna Models Wiring Diagram Links Index*** at another website.......
