Default Derby cover replacement question

Stupid question, but I came from a Ducati with dry clutch. Do I need to drain oil prior to replacing the derby cover or does it sit low enough to pull the cover and replace?

If the bike is upright, you can replace without loss of fluid... We are talking 06+ dyna right?

If the bike is verticle, NOT on the jiffy stand, you shouldn't have any issues other than super tight fasteners. I'd have a second set of fasteners on hand.

Put a 2x4 under the jiffy stand to keep the bike as vertical as possible and you should not have any problems....Just remember to change the gasket....

Just a reminder, use a T27 driver ant not a T25. The T25 seems to fit but will surely strip the fastener.

I don't stand mine upright and I can take my derby cover off without spilling anything while it's on the jiffy stand.

Well seeing as how you fill it after a change on the jiffy stand with the cover off, one would ASSume you could pull the cover on the stand without fluid loss.

The ultimate answer depends on...."how did you top it off before?"

If you topped it off while vertical..and you try to change the derby cover while she's leaning on the jiffy...obviously it will spill a little bit. Hey..some people top it off this way as a preference..they like a little more fluid in there.

If you topped it off while on the jiffy...or just shy of topping off...she most likely will not spill when you pull the cover.

I re-use the derby gasket quite a few times...if you're even marginally careful while removing the screws..and putting them back on..she won't rip, and..I'm on 6th or 7th re-use by now, no leaks. Not a lot of pressure in there...and they are quite thick.
