so the other day I was riding like normal and I thought I heard a small grind. I couldn't tell where the sound came from, especially with my V&H exhaust.
So this past weekend I put the stock exhaust on. The sound is coming from the transmission. and it seems to get really loud when I make a right hand turn.
It is an 06 Street Bob with 73000 miles on it. I have done all the maintenance myself and regularly change all fluids at each 5000 mile interval.
I really have not torn apart a transmission and I'm hesitant to do so.
Are there any obvious things that I can look for or do to isolate the problem?
yeah at first I thought it was the primary. but I inspected that last weekend and didn't find anything loose. The only thing that needs to be replaced in there is the chain tensioner nylon bushing
Jack it up. Secure it, select the gear you want and start it and let the clutch out and put a stethscope on. If it's grinding you will hear it. Still in doubt then do this. Just went thru my primary. Before you tear into transmssion, pull primary chain and remove clutch basket and remove rear tire and position belt so it's up off drive pulley. Then you can spin input shaft and fill how each gear fills. If you heve a bad bearing you will fill it.
What gear are you in when it makes the noise? Does it change pitch with gears? Will it do it with the clutch released? All questions that may help diagnose.
Do we have a BINGO? Start your bike up...put it in gear...put it back in neutral....listen....while running and in neutral listen some more, and let the clutch out..... any thing sound different?
the IPB will sound like metal roller skates on a sidewalk when you do this simple test. Mine did.... and '06 DYNAS have a history of that problem.
