I chose my '05 Heritage partly because it was carbed. I figured it would be what it was - about $12.00 or something like that to stage one it. Absolutely love it, but need to work on the fuel mileage -36 local and up to 46 hwy if I'm at altitude. It likes heights.
I think BH will spend far more going "backwards", so money isn't the issue.
Bikes do well on EFI, but if one does go down, it's problematic and expensive too. Spanner mentioned that further modding with a carb is easier, cheaper, quicker and so forth.
But yanking my carb to do something to it isn't really a lot of fun.
I'd rather be riding, so I do.
If you have one of the early MM EFI systems and it's giving you problems, like my 97 did from day one, don't hesitate to switch to carb. My system was worked on by three HD dealers and several independent shops. I had two Power Commanders installed and it still ran poorly, poppin and cracking out the pipes, stumbling on acceleration, uncontrollable idle speed etc, etc. A local independemt shop.www.psyclebarn.com, or Google Psycle Barn, located in Little Orleans, MD. did the job and it works perfectly. I wish I had enough foresite to have it converted the day I bought it, it would have saved me a helluva lot of headaches and a small fortune. Good luck.
I've been looking at it too but wanted to stay somewhat factory. I did a lot of looking at wiring diagrams and parts manuals and I believe I can do it with all OEM parts. Strip out the wires you don't need and re-purpose those you do by installing them in the correct terminal housings for the "new" electronics.

Get carb HD and oldschool it.
Just my 98 cents
Not everyone has inspections, Washington is completely dumping emissions testing and they don't do safety inspections. Regarding resale, take a look at his bike, it will have a limited, very specific market. I don't mean that in a bad way, his bike is beautiful but being so heavily modded a carb will be the last thing a potential buyer will notice.
lol heres my peeps lol. yea i actually would like a diagram and parts list. from what I've herd the factory ecm is still part of the bike but I'm not 100% sure on that. my bike is an 07, and i live in texas they kinda don't care bout the epa regs over here. and to the fella wanting pix yea no prob ill throw some back on here in this post for you bro.
o yea by the way i went and got that swing arm bag from the dealer today in brown and it looks pretty good only small downfall thing i don't like is that the brown is a lil off. i threw it on ne way and i really like it a lot, if you have the small fork bag id say this one is about another bag and a half. i can fit 2 bottles of water laying down in it plus my wallet and phone and stuff...really nice that i can tae it off when i want and the lil bracket isn't that noticeable

The ECU stays if you go with the aftermarket ignition. My thoughts were to use the electronics from a carbed 05. There is a thread on here with wiring diagrams that Rene put together (FXD2003) and in there a guy posted the entire 2005 tech manual. I'm good with wiring so I figured I could manipulate my harness and use the boxes from an 05 and do it with factory stuff and an S&S carb. Right now I have a bigger fish to fry so the bike is just being ridden but I will tackle this conversion some day!
Hmmmm good info on that 05 wireing. I think that really may be the way to go. I'm gonna go searching for 05 wire harness and ECM. The idea of the brains still being Harley is a plus in my book. And yea I contacted yockumbros out his yesterday.
