I just pulled my Thunder-header off for it's third strip and respray and even though it's probably savable I'm wondering if maybe I could replace it with something other than a Thunder-header without screwing up the tune.I have a custom map created on a dyno for this combination of intake and exhaust and no I don't want to go back to the dyno. I see allot of pipes now that have the same header bend but different mufflers.I wonder if something like a Bassani Road Rage would be close enough? Anybody else done something similar?
I don't think it is a stupid question but here goes. If it was me and you like the TH pipe, have it coated with a jet hot coating. That should be the last time it will need to be done. They have both a silver and a black coating as well as a few colors. It holds the heat in the pipe so it is less hot on your leg and exits the exhaust gas faster. I'm sure there is a place in San Diego that does it.
If you're tired of the pipe, then the Bassani is a good power pipe. It is also LOUD and hot. You can wrap it in exhaust wrap but it will crack the pipe eventually. Did I mention it's LOUD...? There are heat shields for it but they are a joke and don't help with the heat on your leg at all.
BTW I don't think your tune will change with the Bassani.
I'm gonna see if I can get my Thunder Header sand blasted this week and go from there.I think the closest place to me that does Jet Hot is in Fresno not sure if it would be very cost effective to box it up and send it to them and then have it Jet Hot coated. I think by the time I did that I could almost buy a new pipe.Anyone know what it costs have something like that jet Hot coated? I know it's been done.
After my Sampson Ray Price blew out I put the SuperTrapp on the bike. I figured both 2-1 so the tune would be close. I was wrong. Bike ran OK but do much better after the tune a month later.
Jet hot or similar coating sounds the way to go. If you get another TH you will probably face the same corrosion issues.
Ed, I'm running a new Bassani slip-on right now on a stock fld header system. No tune and it runs fine with no popping and performance increased by 3hp and 8lbs. of torque. When I had the whole system on, it ran like a raped ape but popped etc. I will be going back to new full system soonly and will do a tune, breather, and power commnder. So whole system needs a tune but just slip-on is fine, tune-wise. With a bassani, your finish issues will go away because of the build/finish quality. They also have contrasting tips in chrome and black. Even their black tip is machined with polished groove look..see my pics. Just an fyi based upon my experience.
If you refinish yours, you should be fine with just about any of them if my experience is representative of your situation.
