Cool just wondering?

just curious i ride an 04 dyna lowrider, i have plans on riding out to south carolina from new mexico and of course back. is it possible to upgrade my 5 speed transmission to 6 spd. thinking about fuel consumption, wear on the motor. on such a long ride also have a couple long rides planned this summer. is this a good idea or should i leave well enough alone. just thinking because the bikes has 33(K) on the clock. i dont wrench on my bike so your thoughts would be appreciated if in fact its been done before.

Default New Trans ?

I'm not sure but I think Baker drive train makes a 6-speed that fits in a 5-speed case. The only problem is that it is expensive. If you have a stock engine, longevity is key, then it may be worth the cost. Be warned though that it will add little to nothing to the value of your bike.

You could also drop the revs a little with a different drive pulley and that would be a lot cheaper and easier to fit.

HD sells a kit to bump your 5 speed up to a 6 speed, there was a write in a recent mag about it but now I can't find it.

You really do not need it, but this is the part number.

Screamin' EagleŽ 6-Speed Transmission - Gear Set

The 6-Speed Gear Set Kits replace the stock gear set in the vehicle without removing the entire transmission. Gear Set Kits include all necessary hardware, and require slight modification (template included) to the Original Equipment transmission case.

33103-03A

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

Fits '01-'05 DynaŽ models. Requires separate purchase of appropriate Side Cover Release Kit.

MSRP US $2,099.95

A lot of people will tell you not to waste your money. However, I'm not one of them. Yes, it is brutally expensive. But, I think it's some of the best money I've spent on a mod.

Regardless of the wear and tear on the engine or the potential for better fuel mileage (you'll see very little if any), when I was out on a four-lane running 65 MPH or above, I was constantly trying to find another gear. The engine was screaming. Now that I've had a six-speed gear set installed, the engine is running at a lot lower RPM. I even had a 30T primary gear installed to take better advantage of the bottom end torque and with a .86 sixth gear, I'm running at least 500 RPM lower at 65 MPH. It doesn't sound like a lot but it's pretty significant.

Now if you are going to do a six-speed tranny, by far the cheapest way out is to install a new gear set in your existing 5-speed case. But beyond that, don't cheap out on the gear set itself. Either get the Harley gear set or a Baker gear set. The guy who worked on my bike installed an aftermarket gear set in my bike (twice) and it was junk. I junked it and had someone else install a Baker six speed.

Someone mentioned the expense of the Baker six speed. If you'll check around, you'll find that the Baker six speed is cheaper than the Harley six speed. And, the Baker six speed comes with a 5 year warranty as opposed to the two year Harley warranty. My Baker six speed shifts a lot smoother than my Harley five speed, I have no problem telling when I'm in 1st gear, and I never have trouble shifting into neutral any more.
