Default Time for some cam deceisions

My Lowrider Ive had since new in 2004,is now over 80,000 kilometers, thats a bit better than 50k miles. Its stock except for stage 1,and so far Ive never even opened the cam cover to inspect the chain tensioners. I was thinking its about time, even though theres no abnormal noises, runs fine etc,and mabey once opened I should go with the hydralic set-up,as Im not gonna have the crank welded and trued for gears. Anyone from Canada here tell me how much it cost you to have this done and if you got it done at a dealers? What mileage? Mabey mines just a good one and Ill have no problems, may just run it for another summer the way it is.

Hi From Ottawa, as for the hyd conversion the dealer says it will cost 1200.00 all in, As for your mileage, i would have those tensioners checked, mine went at 38km and my friends went at 36km and took out the cams lifters and oil pump with it, another friends 05 went bad at 80km and another at 68km, not to alarm you but get them checked ASAP as they really don't make much noise until it's too late.

50,000 miles. I'd sure check it! Too many bad/expensive things can go wrong, trusting it to be one of the good ones. A complete Andrews Hydraulic upgrade kit with your choice of cams is about $750.

I thought H-D was past the point of building motors that destruct after 50k miles. Wish mine had have gone while the extended warranty was in effect. This pisses me off to the point where Im seriously considering going to another brand after 30 years on Harleys. Mine needs a battery, two tires,1200 dollar cam job, maybe a belt, all to get back on the road next summer.

Don't you have to remove the cam plate, outer cogs, just to check the inner one?

The spring-tensioner issue was addressed in the '06 models, I believe. If you can do the work yourself: the factory service manual is money well-spent and will pay for itself quickly.
