need help removing reflectors

After you get 'em off...any remaining adhesive residue can easily be removed with acetone. You can gently rub the area with acetone which will melt the residue without harming the clear coat or chrome finish.

how come when i removed mine i had different shades on the fork legs. there was no resedue at all but a strong outline on the legs???? i put mine back on for now because I am not sure what to do.
I also used polish as well to try and buff out the outline. but that didnt work either
