I just bought the first bike of my life, a 2006 FXDC. Having never ridden, I read the Dyna manual front to back. If I follow the gear shift sequence chart, the engine knocks loudly for a few seconds then goes away each time I change gears. This occurs with every gear change. The chart is structured as follows:

First to second-15mph
Second to third-25mph
Third to fourth-35mph
Fourth to fifth-45mph
Fifth to sixth-55mph

I find that if I add 5mph to this chart for each shift change sequence, there is no knocking. I just want to confirm, is this knocking sound I'm hearing what is refered to as "lugging"? Also, what exactly causes the knocking sound and where is it coming from? Will it cause any damage?

Thanks,
Mike C.
Lugging your ride is BAD.............. The knocking id probabling detonation. Try this
1-2=25
2-3=45
3-4=60
4-5=85
5-6=105

This will make riding a lot more fun!!!!!! Oh.......... don't break any laws, though!!! LOL

Oh man, I only have a 5 speed! Guess I can't go over 105.
I have always shifted by ear and never looked to see what speed to shift at. Guess that comes from learning to drive a motorcycle and stick shift car early in life.
I will say it probably is a good thing to know, when I first got my bike it had the stock mufflers and when riding with others who have um, performance exhausts I couldn't hear mine. I took care of that in a hurry.

I also shift by sound and don't have a clue what speed that translates to.

I liked your plan so I tried the 105mph shift. Anyone know where I can get a 7th I think I need just one more for the 120mph plus. Any ideas lol
Well, over 120 I'll probably get blown off the bike anyway. Besides the fines would be unbearable in 7th gear.

When the sales guy told me 6th gear wasn't really usable until 80 mph, I thought he was pulling my leg. I do cruise in 6th around 60 mph, but not if I am planning on accelerating much.

I don't know about that 5-6 @ 105 cause if somethin happened by the time I stopped rollin I wouldn't be much more than about 50 lbs of guts in a ribcage.
Don't try it in traffic.

Since I did the 2-1 pipe, and the stg 1 a/c, my 06 acts alot better down low. when I first got it, it lugged real bad too. plus the head pipes turned blue in about 5 miles. Pitch the stock mufflers, or knock the baffles out, it'll run cooler.

Lengthen the frame, and add another 6-speed (with the new gears for true OD) after the primary one. Put on a heel/toe shifter, altered so the back is the 2nd tranny. Then you have a 36-speed

Shift at 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50 (you get the picture)

...or put the back one in 5th, and you have the normal shift pattern using just the front. Kick the back one into 6th and have that '7th' gear.
I got a headache reading this..............[] As for the poster of this thread.......keep the revs up.....

This is the MPH i shift at

1-2 25
2-3 35
3-4 45
4-5 55
5-6 65

If i go 5MPH below the speed i shift into the gear then i downshift. ie: 50 mph i would shift back down to 4th

I get good milege doing this, about 38-40 around town and 44-45 on the highway, i usually cruise at 70-75 MPH
