Engine knock (lugging?)
I just bought the first bike of my life, a 2006 FXDC. Having never ridden, I read the Dyna manual front to back. If I follow the gear shift sequence chart, the engine knocks loudly for a few seconds then goes away each time I change gears. This occurs with every gear change. The chart is structured as follows:
First to second-15mph
Second to third-25mph
Third to fourth-35mph
Fourth to fifth-45mph
Fifth to sixth-55mph
I find that if I add 5mph to this chart for each shift change sequence, there is no knocking. I just want to confirm, is this knocking sound I'm hearing what is refered to as "lugging"? Also, what exactly causes the knocking sound and where is it coming from? Will it cause any damage?
Thanks,
Mike C.

I shift at 5 mph higher (sometimes even a little higher) than you and have no problems...like the others said..you're lugging. I'm pretty sure than long term lugging isn't exactly good for the engine...but I'm no mechanic

Since you read the manual, it said that the chart was a guide and not necessarily where you should shift. It all depends upon terrain. On level ground and downhill you may be able to shift at those points, but not going up hills or even riding two up. You'll find where it is best to shift. Lugging will hurt your engine.

I liked your plan so I tried the 105mph shift. Anyone know where I can get a 7th I think I need just one more for the 120mph plus. Any ideas lol

Get in touch with how the engine feels and you will know when to shift. I grew up riding what we called "roach" bikes with no tachs and no speedometers (stripped down Triumphs and BMWs). You can hear and feel when it is time to shift. Go by the numbers for the time being. Eventually you will feel more a part of the motorcycle and you will hear and feel when to change gears.

Shift at 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50 (you get the picture)
...or put the back one in 5th, and you have the normal shift pattern using just the front. Kick the back one into 6th and have that '7th' gear.

Lengthen the frame, and add another 6-speed (with the new gears for true OD) after the primary one. Put on a heel/toe shifter, altered so the back is the 2nd tranny. Then you have a 36-speed

As for me I usually add 5-8 to their shift chart. I don't know about that 5-6 @ 105 cause if somethin happened by the time I stopped rollin I wouldn't be much more than about 50 lbs of guts in a ribcage.
