Were they possibly stuck to the pipes when you pulled them off? It will help if you tell us what engine / exhaust - old and new - you are dealing with.Usually gaskets are neede and they only cost 20$ or something.
Sorry, I've got a 2005 Wide Glide with the 88ci motor, I put Samson Exhaust on the old exhaust were Screamin Eagle Stage 2 what I thought were slip ons, bout her used, so I'm not sure if the guy before was totally stupid.....
I thought the gaskets were pretty much a standard 'requirement' but I didnt seem any there.....
The gaskets will smash into the exhaust port so when you pull your pipes it will look like nothing is in there. They camouflage themselves in the head and are hard to see. dig around with a pic and you will find them
they're there, just hard to see... i did this just last nite - either dig around with a pick like ynots said or use a small flat-head screwdriver/butter knife to separate the gasket from the port. Once there's a bit lifted some pliers should yank it out no problem
