Default Help w/derby cover

I have an '09 Dyna FXD with the stock 5 screw stainless steel derby cover. The dealer has always done my services and now I want to try to do more work on my own....I'm feelin' the pinch in the disposable income department.

I like one of the new custom derby covers and I want to install it myself. So here goes my questions:

1. Do I need to drain the fluid out of the primary before I take off the cover and if so, why?

2. Can the bike be on the kickstand or does it have to be straight up to drain it properly?

3. How important is it to have an inch pound torque wrench and if it is important what major chain sells a good one for a fair price?

4. Can you re-use the fluid?

5. Is there something important I forgot to ask?

Thanks a whole bunch in advance

You'll want to have a helper to hold the bike staright up if you want to just replace the derby cover without doing a service on it.

leave it on the stand man, unbolt it and bolt the new one on, if it does not have the rib in it for a new o ring style gasket just get an older model dyna gasket for it not problem,. tighen them down like you would a car going across as you tighten this will ensure a good seal, blue lock tite on the bolts... helps if you use a punch on the center of the torques bit before you try to remove it, breaks the loc tite loose

I just put a thin piece of plywood down with a 2 by 4 under kickstand. No fluid will leak out. Piece of cake. Or use a stand.

All sound advice as offered above and +1 on putting a 2 x 4 under the kickstand. This will keep ghe bike more vertical and no fluid will come out.....

Default Torx Fasteners

The Torx fasteners that hold the derby cover on are T27s and not T25s, so be sure you use the right size or you will strip them out. It's almost certain you will need a new gasket and not an o-ring. The o-ring is used on the stock cover only and any other cover takes a different type of gasket. Put the fasteners back in good and snug... there is no need to muscle fu*k them, and like Joe said "use blue locktite."

Use a 1/4" drive to torque them down so you don't strip them out. Snug them down lightly and then torque the top one down first, go clockwise by doing every other one until you have them all torqued down.
