Default Couple Questions about tires....

Bike: 2004 Low Rider

Ques.1: What is the widest tire/rim combo to fit in the stock swing arm?

Ques.2: Original tire is a 150, can I go wider on a stock rim, if so, how wide?

Thanks

Not really a dumb question just nobody happens to have the answer.I've yet to see a bike that you couldn't go up at least 1 size in width. You could probably go up 2 sizes if you could find somebody willing to shoe horn it on there for you. There are 2 problems with going to wider tires on the stock rim ; first, it just gets harder to get them on, then second they become less wide as they're pinched in.So to answer your question you can go to a 160 on your stock rim. Also, Dunlops seem to be the fattest tires out there so you can gain some width just by changing brands.

Well, I'll be replacing F and R when the season starts and I'm looking to go to the Commander IIs. The stock Dunlop is a 150 rear I think. I was just curious because after looking at some of the wide-tire kits out there, they are expensive. I would love to get a 200 rear out back. I know I would have to buy a new rim for that, but can I stuff it under the stock fender and in between the stock swingarm?

I guess a much better question would have been, how large a tire/rim combo can I get between the stock swingarm? I know I'll have to swap out the fender and might be doing a chop soon anyways.

Thanks for the help.

You definitely won't get a 200. A 160 on a 16" or a 170 on a larger rim is possible depending on the actual tire width. Look on the manufacturer's web site for specs. The stock 150 measures between 5.9" and 6.25" depending on make and model. I'm getting ready to put an Avon 160 on mine that measures 6.6" wide. Some of Avon's 170 tires only measure 6.7". That is why I say it depends on the tire. To do a 170: you will have to have a 17" rim though. I haven't seen a 16". You probably need 4-4.5" wide as well. I don't think you will be able to go wider than around 6.7" though. You will also have to modify your fender bolts as well.

You can safely do a 160 on your stock wheel, you may have alignment issues due to the belt width though. I made custom spacers to get mine to align properly.
You can go to a 180 on an 18" wheel, if you plannish the rear fender and move the wiring.
04 LR is the same exact frame as the 05 WG,

I have been looking into swapping out the rear fender or chopping it myself. Just need to get an idea....did not think about the spacers though. Good point, thanks hog. At what point do you need to swap out the stock swing arm for a wide tire kit? 180, 200?

Frankly if going bigger than 160 is your goal, do it right and swap the swingarm, while it is possible to squeeze a 180 in there on an 18" wheel, it would not leave you much if any room, and differences in actual width of different tires might make it more of a pain than really necessary.

Here is a good link to go to:

http://www.hdwheels.com/Product.htm

They have a section where they show custom size wheels without needing any modification.
