I just put an Avon Storm 2 on my SG, size 190-50/17 and love the great handling.. I cant comment on the wear yet, only have about 400 miles so far,but great looking tire too....they also make a 180,190 and 200 for the 17 inch rim.....
I need to replace mine too. I have had three factory Dunlops on the front. All with that cracking defect discussed here on the forum. No Dunlop for me. Besides the Pirellis, there is also the option of the Michelin Scorcher. That what the 2012's Wide Glides are wearing. I think the rear is slightly narrower though. Pricey too because last I checked, our size was only available from the Dealer. Some guys are running Metzlers but I don't think you can get exact same sizes. Again, slightly narrower in back.
I have had excellent experiences with Metzlers but believe I am going with the Pirelli Dragons. Only because I like the 180 rear and don't think I want to drop back to a 160 and cant go up to a 200 without changing the rim. It has been done but opinions vary on the safety of it. If Metzler made a 180 that would fit it, I wouldnt consider anything else.
I went with Night Dragons. Dunlops SUCK!...as evidenced by the fact that HD dropped them. You won't believe the difference a tire can make in handling.
Another WG owner with a set of NightDragons. Feel a little better than the Dunlops but don't see a huge difference. Now, when I first put them on there was a considerable difference but I think that was more due to the Dunlops being worn out (the rear was bald and squared off).
I'm interested to see what kind of milage I get out of these. I was getting about 11K out of my Dunlop rear tires. My front tire was still the original tire from when I bought the bike and had about 22K miles on it. If I get 9 or 10 out of the rear NDs and 18 to 20k out of the front I'll be happy.
