Get the Parts Catalog for your bike (not the P&A book). The exploded diagrams alone are well worth the investment not to mention how handy it comes in when you're looking to buy parts online and need the part number. I never work on my bikes without having both books nearby.
Exactly right. The parts book is very helpful. Buying one was a suggestion I got from a member here when I started, and it was a good one. It paid for itself very quickly. I use it all the time.
Man.....my stealer is charging 350 sobs for a 10K service, and then bitched about having to pick up and drop off my bike for free! But hey the good news is that they throw in the cost of the M.O.T. test for free, which otherwise would be Ł29.00
How much do you guys get fleaced for this service in the U.S.?
That's what I paid for my 10k service. The dealer worked on my bike for 4hours. Included a new rear tire.
Everything was adjusted perfectly afterward. I thought it was well worth it. This is my first Harley and we have some great dealerships in HD's homestate. If they do a thorough job, it is worth it.
I bought the manual for my bike, and maybe I am stupid, but I don't think there are enough illustrations. Does anyone know if the Clymer or Haynes manuals has more illustrations ? I am going to do my own oil changes. But I have seen threads on here where people remove the wrong drain plug.

Get the Parts Catalog for your bike from Harleydavidson.com. the Parts Catalog has much more detailed exploded diagrams.
Maintinance is all part ot the enjoyment you get from your bike.
I have always maintained my own bikes and the proper Harley Davidson manual is a must.
No one is going to fuss over doing a good clean job then you.
When you blasting down the road do you know for sure that your spokes are tightened correctly? how about you fallaway?
There are lots of things to concentrate when riding and knowing you have done the proper maintinace helps.
plus when someone ask who does the wrenching you can proudly say I do my own.
All good sound advice - but I am a wrenching kludge. I'm that guy that crosses the threads, drops the drain plug down the road drain, over tightens the nut / bolt / screw, etc. etc.
There are lots of things I can do - but D.I.Y. sadly is not one of them, so respecting my limits and my wallet (getting put right what I've messed up) I tend to let the 'experts' take care of that stuff. At least then if they mess up it doesn't cost me any more to get it put right!
With all the info out there..ie. service manuel, video's, ect. I don't know why you would take your bike to the dealership. The service is really easy plus I just want to know for sure everything was done and done right. Even though the harley certified mechanics have more knowledge then me, I find they are rushed and don't take the care and time to make sure everything is done like it was their bike.
not to get off topic, but i see this arguement ALL THE TIME here on the forums. i installed all my accessories at my leisure, but i have my dealer do my routine service for many reasons.
1) i don't want to
2) it keeps the dealership in business, maybe they'll even be there when i'm ready to buy another bike
3) it keeps bread on the mechanics table and $ in his wallet, $ of which i hope he brings to me to help fund my business.
4) i trust them to do a good job.. i do my job well, and would expect the same from everyone else.
5) it's like 250-300 bux, seriously what are you saving by doing it yourself? maybe 160 bux?
I take pride in my bike, and know if i ever decide to sell it, it will look better with a stack of dealer reciepts showing all maintanence has been done in regular intervals.

Just because you paid for service does not necessarily mean you got any service. Ever been to Jiffy Lube? The ONLY way to know you got proper service on your bike is to do it yourself. You really think Billy Jim Bob in the back garage is really checking the torque specs on every bolt on your bike??? I know it gets done on my bike because I did it myself.
Most of you people have no idea, do you."stealer" i think you'll find that as a Harley Tech working at a dealership and sees what costs we have, plus what ongoing year by year training we techs have to do and at the cost to the dealership.We have to service machines most of you wouldn't even know where to look if the battery died.Very disrespectful of you, especially as you are reliant on having your bike properly maintained by top trained technicians.
