I have an '11 wide glide, with the stock pipes into rush slip ons (2in baffles).
I *love* the look/routing of the stock pipes.. to me, they are perfect. No aftermarket system seems to keep the same curve infront of the front peg.. Harley got it right from the factory, which is awesome...
my question is.. since mine is a 2011.. I have the cats in my pipes.. my pipes run hott as sh-t... and I'd love to get a lil more performance out of my bike..
a buddy of mine has a 2009 fat bob that he put v/h straight pipes on pretty immediately and said he'd give me his stock pipes (2009 does not have the cats) for me to put on my bike and run into my rush slip ons...
will doing this exhaust mod, and a k&n airfilter (or screamin eagle) along with a techlusion TFI tuner give me A. any performance increases (low or high end torque/accel), B. better gas mileage, C. cooler pipes, D. better choppier sound, or E (hopefully), all of the above??
Anytime you open up your breather & exhaust with a more free flowing set up it is going to improve your performance & yes your bike & exhaust will run cooler since you are eliminating the cats if you do as described above. A tuner of some sort is highly recommend by most to make your bike get the most out of your mods + keep the AFR from running too lean since you have opened it up by adding a breather & got rid of your cats. I recommend the SE breather kit. I don't know anything about the techlusion TFI tuner...my bike is tuned with SERTPRO.
simply put, if you put on a headpipe without cats and an open set of mufflers like the rush slipons, you now have as open of an exhaust as if you would of bought a set of after market pipes. great for those that like the stock look but want the open exhaust. you will get performance gains with an open ac and a bike that is tuned right. usually this will mean you will sacrafice a few mpg. mostly because the tuner will be giving more fuel to compensate for the open air fuel. shurley with a good tune your bike will run cooler because of more fuel to the motor. it wont run so lean. another good thing is you will get much better sound once there is no cat sleeping in your headpipe...............
The pipe change will reduce the heat (no cats). Without tuning, the performance will be degraded, but it will sound like it is faster . Any performance improvements you get are a simply function of how well the tuner works. I don't know anything about the "techlusion TFI tuner" but it does not seem to be a major brand, so I'd be skeptical you will see optimum performance in terms of mpg and power, although it may be better than nothing. A tuning tool like the TTS tuning kit I use, would allow you to dial things in well. Tuning a stock bike in itself provides more performance than changing pipes or air filter. A tuning kit would allow you to get more out of a pipe/airfilter mod however.
Oh, there has been some changes to O2 sensors over recent years. I'm not sure if there is any difference in bung size between the 2011 and 2009 head pipe.
