Helmets
#51
Well, after reading this and other threads on FF helmets and helmets in general, I went and tried some modulars on yesterday. No doubt, a FF will provide the most safety but personally? I just can't wear one, I don't think.
It's not looks I'm concerned with at all, it's how they made me feel.
I tried the good ones on too, like the shoei, the aria(sp.?), and a scorpian.
Prices ranged from $300-900. When I put them on, I felt so encapsulated that i knew i couldn't hang with any of them.
To you FF guys, is there a period where you get used to them or were they ok from jump street when you originally put them on? Because for me, all of them kinda freaked me out as they seemed way, way confining.

It is all about the fit and venting with a FF helmet. As long as you are not behind a high windshield, FF helmets and high windshields do not co exist well together, you will gets lots of fresh and cooling air entering the vents in a FF helmet but without the wind blast you get at 60mph in an open face helmet. Most FF helmets flow cool air over your face and the top of your head unlike say a 1/2 helmet. Not all FF hemets fit equally as well though. Depending on not just the size, but the shape of your head certain brands/models may fit better than others. Arai make specific models to fit specific head shapes (eg. round, oval, long oval). Look for ECE 22.05 or Snell M2010 certification. Avoid Snell M2005 certified helmets.

Fat Tony makes some good observations as well as some of the others. I wear the Shoei RF something er other FF. Nice helmet, good fit, and although in summer it's easy to bend towards something less, I just can't seem to do it. As far as the stock windshield and FF; I ride with the visor up (unless it's cold), and it works well for me.

I absolutely love my matte black Bell RS1. It significantly cuts down on fatigue on long rides at 70+ mph. Plus it's pretty quiet in comparison to my Bell 500 or Licks NovDot. I usually stick with the 3/4 around town but am sold on my FF when it's cold or if I'm going to be on the bike all day. I also think it looks cool with the dark smoke visor.
