To each their own, but they dont offer much protection. The thing I think of is if I go down I want my head to survive and dont care how the helmet looks. I wear a full face titainium lined helmet so I can ride again one day if I go down. As they say its not if you are going down its just when.

When my buddy lowsided he was wearing a half helmet. The asphalt gouges in the side of the helmet tell me that even a half helmet probably saved him from some severe head trauma.
The german style has more coverage than a half helmet, not much more, but more...and you can get DOT approved ones now.
Either way, half german or full...all better protection than nothing at all.

Another little tidbit. Insurance survey shows 78% of all head injuries occur to the facial area. I had a friend get it in the face and when I went to the hospital I thoght I went into the wrong room. He broke all the bones in his face and had a completey different face now. Actually something was funny out of all of this. He was kinda ugly when he went in the hospital and came out really good looking. Iam sure this is not a common thing that happens.

The other consideration with helmets is what airborn hazards exist in your area. A guy in my neighborhood that was riding with a 3/4 helmet with face shield took a wasp, stinger first in the face during a ride of his. It sounds like right after that, he and his wife got modular helmets to give better full face protection. I know that I've had something bounce off my face shield at least twice while riding on local roads at 45mph.

In any case, I'm not sure if the question was what we all think about the German style helmets in terms of protection, or if it was a general question about their comfort. I had originally planned to ride with a shorty back when I first put serious thought into finally getting a motorcycle, but a combination of hearing people talk about rocks and bugs in the air, and stories about broken jaws after sailing over someones car convinced me that full face was the way to go personally. Surprisingly enough, I actually find wearing the full face helmet to be somewhat comfortable, and if I crack the face shield up a notch, there is plenty of airflow, even when standing at a light.

i agree that the half helmets are not as safe as the full helmets. I was just woundering if anyone had one of the german half helmets an if they liked it or not

I just got this one at Barb's near Philly.....it was on sale for $70.00 so I grabbed it....it fits tight and I am not used to a can on my head...but after all this time I figure I better not push my luck anymore...
it's comfortable but no helmet really is for me....I will wear it....I keep telling myself...and my wife....(THE REASON FOR THE HELMET!)

I'm seriously considering one of these carbon fiber helmets. They don't look bad and have got to be lighter/more comfortable than my current helmet.
