I just purchased a rear chrome pulley cover for my 03 FXD and need some advice. I plan on using the orig bolts but plan on cleaning the threads on the bolts and the thread holes on the wheel as well. Do you use red or blue loctite? How many of you have reinstalled the axle backwards to avoid removing the exhaust next time the wheel comes off? Any problems with reusing the bolts?
i was told that I should not re-use my bolts and use blue lock tite
Yeah, That
do a search and see how many times pulley bolts have sheared off after being removed. I did AFTER installing my rear wheel after tire replacement, and the next day I put NEW ones in.
It isn't the fact of them being clean or not, it is the fact that they have been streesed. The amount of torque it takes to removed the bolts fatigues them to the point of possible future falilure.
cheap insurance.....
Just get them at the dealer. They ain't expensive, and they come with the loctite already on them, so you don't have to mess with that. I agree with what others have said - replace the bolts as they were torqued down tight enough to stress them. If you get bolts at the local hardware, I'd consider red loctite rather than blue. these are large bolts and they are critical. You do not want them coming out while you're running down the freeway.

Cannot agree here enough. They are called "Torque to Yield" bolts and are designed to only be used once.
