OK, I've searched and found nothing to satisfy me...
Bike: 2004 LR
All stock except V&H BSS (as far as I can tell, bought it used)
Bike sat in the garage all "winter" - not much snow in CT this year. Went to start it the other day, nothing...dead battery. Replaced battery and the bike fired right up. However, now there is a fairly loud ticking noise coming from the front cylinder. Couldn't ride it for a long time, just around the block. But concerned now. Anyone else experience anything like this after winter storage?
How cold was it? Also did you garage heat up and cool down allot over the winter? My guess is oil is either very cold and it hadn't warmed up enough to fully move through the engine, or you have moisture in your engine case causing the oil to be too thin. Either way you should drop the oil and change the filter every spring.
What he said. Sounds like a lifter didn't pump up. Try letting it idle a while and warm the oil completely and see if the lifter gets enough oil to fill up. Hydraulic lifters do that when they sit for a long while. Hopefully all will be ok when oil is restored to the lifter...dd50 tomp
In CT myself but never put the bike away.
Good year not to put it away.
I would change then fluids. I'm still using my September oil.
I rode at least every two weeks this winter. No stable here.
Time for me to change them fluids too.
Off on my bike now, got to love this year.
I know the fluids need to be changed. It still has the same fluids from "last season". I'm planning on putting on a new set of tires this year. I will change fluids as soon as the money comes in (same with tires).
I rode to work this morning (hour-plus ride). I did hear the ticking this morning while idling in the garage (not heated, so its temp fluctuated with the weather) but when on the highway the pipes and wind drowned out everything, so I felt better then.
I'm hoping a new tank of premium and some riding (especially after fluid change) will cure any other problems. It has been a while since I rode last, but this is a new sound. I think you guys might be right about the lifters sitting for a time and bleeding down.
Ticking noise here too this weekend. I have ridden it a few times over our very mild winter. I did put my baffles in before my ride other day so it may have done it before and I just couldn't hear it but I don't think so.
