HD Engine Guard won't fit!

HD Engine Guard won't fit!
I ordered an engine guard last week from my local dealer. Got it yesterday and went to put it on today. IT WOULDN"T FIT! The U bolts were too wide to go through the holes in the guard. If the bolts were any smaller they wouldn't fit around the frame. I am taking it back tomorrow and have the parts guy show me how they make the U bolts fit the guard and still go around the frame. I really didn't want to pay the dealer $80 to install a simple engine guard. I mean it is only three bolts. I guess I'll get my $209 back and order an aftermarket one. It is really bad when HD parts won't fit their bikes. Maybe it is time to go back to a metric bike. Maybe another Triumph...

by the way, about 10 years ago i had an fj1200 and on more than one occasion parts that i bought at the dealer would not work properly and required returning...
