I'm trying to install an engine guard on a dyna. It's the one with the u bolts on it.
The issue I'm having is that the holes on the engine guard with the u bolts are supposed to slide through are much closer together than the u bolts and it doesn't fit. They're like 1/4" from being able to fit into the guard holes. Any suggestions on what to do here?
Dealer installed mine when I bought my '06. I just took a look at the u bolts and they do not look like they've been spread apart or squeezed together to fit the holes.
Looks like you're not the only one with the problem.
if the u-bolt is too wide spread them apart, if they are too narrow squeeze them in.
Tried squeezing them and scratched the frame. They still wouldn't fit. Even if I could get them squeezed enough, it would most likely not allow the guard up against the frame as the ubolts would be out of shape and pulling back.
For starters, do the holes in the bar align with your down tubes and do they match the diameter? If so, you can find all different sizes for U bolts or perhaps a flat backing plate with regular bolts on each tube(?). If not, best find another bar IMO.
post some pics so we can get a better idea what your talking about.
This is actually for my dad's bike and he's taking the guard back to the dealer today. This is about what it looks like.
It looked like this though with the black being the holes in the guard and the red being the u bolt.
If you were to be able to actually squeeze the u bolt enough to get it in, the guard would be able to fit against the frame because of the way the u bolt would have to bend in the first places. The u bolts fit around the frame just fine, but the guard holes were entirely too close together, like it was made for a bike with smaller frame tubing. The part numbers to check out though. I think it just may be a defect.
definitely sounds like a manufacturing/packaging issue, seeing as how HD makes many different engine guards for different years and models it sounds as if there were a run of mispackaged units, my engine guard fit with 0 bending or modification to either the u-bolt or bracket or anything else....you have an issue here that "should" only be solved by getting a replacement from the dealer
The dealer told him they were going to put it on for free today after the manager there took a look at it himself and he talked with my dad. I'm anxious to see if they can actually manage to get it on or if they **** up the frame more in the process.
