pre 06 light change
Anyone with a 2005 older dyna change their headlight? I'm all set to change my top mount headlight to bottom mount and know its plugged in inside the frame. I've read older posts saying there is slack in the harness. Not mine. From what i remember frame is sealed. Removing the tank seems like a waste. Anyone have any ideas beside splicing new light in? Btw new light is HD stock, plug n play...
I read a post where a guy was putting a 7" fatboy light on his FXD and he was able to disconnect the wires from the bulb socket then pull them out one at a time and insert them back into his new light
I installed a 7 inch fatboy light on my bike, all i had to do was pull the wires out of the old light and install in the new light, all you need to do is remove the connector and pull wires from inside of light out.To get to the connector in the frame what i did was lift the front of gas tank to access the connector by pulling harness carefully. There is an opening on left side of bike just in front of the tank, that is where the harness enters the frame, yes there is slack and lots of it.If the harness won't come out you will need to go at back of bike in front of the rear wheel there is a cover that would need to be removed to feed the harness. pic attached.

I got the light and mount off of ebay. I used a sportster headlight from an 883 custom between 04-07 they were bottom mounted. The mount is also from an 04-07 883 custom. It was all plug and play. For 3 years i was afraid to drill my bottom triple tree. It was one of the easiest mods i ever did. Street bob, wide glide, night train headlights/ mounts work too. Sportster headlight setup was chrome. Total cost was around $100.00. Dont forget upper triple tree cover if you do the mod. Pm me if you have any other questions.
