I read some of oil change threads good info.
I just got back from dealer bought more chrome well (ordered).
I desided to do my own oil chance get tired of the 300.00 cost.
I got new filter and oil using Harley synthetic 20w-50.
Asked about primary and transmission oil was told to use same oil in them both,IS THIS CORRECT? Thanks for any help
With that said, you are opening an ongoing debate about lubricants... so expect either nothing because people are finally burned out on the topic, or ten pages of opinions.
It seems there are four leaders in the lube market (as far as what is being used, not what is best)
Amsoil
Redline
Mobile1
Syn3
I would say the first two are neck and neck on usage, then Mobile1, then Syn3. There are plenty of people that use Syn3 in all three holes and have not issues. I know (via the web, not in person) a guy that put 100k on his TC88 using Syn3 the whole time without issue.
Others will tell you that its OK in the motor, but to use something different in the tranny.
Personally, I use the Redline trio in my bike (20/50, MTL, Shockproof).
Yes, you can use Harley Syn3 oil in all three places, but I (and others) advise against it. When I used Syn3 3 it increased my shift effort and made it damned near impossible to find neutral. I hated it. I talked with a highly respected local tuner and he made a few suggestions, saying there's a lot of good oil out there. When I pressed him to narrow it down to a single oil per cavity, he made the following recommendation, which I follow:
Red Line 20w60HD (engine)
Red Line MTL 70w80syn (primary)
Red LineHeavy Duty Shockproof Gear Oil (trans)
I'm about to create a post asking where is the best place to buy this online. When I make my purchase I'll post the location and pricing here for you.
