Default Seeking "THE TRUTH"

Happy spring my fellow Dyna brothers and sisters!!!

There have been tons of posts over the years on the whole Stage I on the EFI bikes issue.

I am looking for truth. PURE truth. Is it in the engineering? Perhaps, we have to tailor our riding style, command of the throttle, etc to enable the best results. maybe there is no REAL answer. I am challenging all of you.

I have a 2007 Street Bob. I ran it stock in it's first season (2007 brand new). Over the winter of 2007-08, much thanks to THIS damn forum (blessing and a curse), I installed an "enhanced" stage one - Vance & Hines Straight Shots slip ons, Ness Big Sucker A/C, V&H Fuelpak, and XIED's from Nightrider.

Immediately upon firing her off after all the work was done, I was smiling ear to ear with just the sound. Weeks later taking her out for the first run of the season I was amazed at the smooth, quick throttle response and power....and of course, the sound was even better outdoors!! I have been riding this set-up happily since then. I took her all the way to Sturgis and back (NOT ON A TRAILER) in 2008, and had a blast. NEVER has it even approached overheating even in 100 degree plus heat at Laconia and Sturgis in traffic.

Lately I have been reading the forums more...I know, big mistake!!! But the whole debate over installing a module of some kind on the EFI bikes with more open suck/blow is so rampant. I have sporadic and infrequent bursts of back-pressure, pops, and on occasion backfire. It is infrequent. Since I have not tinkered with the set up in years, I am wondering lately if I should remove the Fuelpak and run with just the XIED's. OR remove those as well and run bare. OR remove the FP and the XIED's, go to HD, bend over, and allow them to insert the download for stage one.

I am seeking the truth here....be careful upon reply!!!! C'mon, lets get to the bottom of this.

Only thing I have a question about is the XIEDs with the fuelpak. If the fuelpak is doing its job I would think the XIEDs would be useless to the bike.

Give it a rest. Are you really that hard up for something to do? You say you have "sporadic and infrequent" pops but otherwise your setup took you back and forth to Sturgis (and not on a trailer). So you have no problem and are looking to create one?

I just got my Wide Glide out the dealer brand new with stage 1. Love it. It does pop every now and then when slowing down. No backfires thou. I do not think or hope its not anything to worry about. LOL

The dealer stage 1 download is designed to work well with the SE slipons and the SE air filter kit. Once you deviate from that combination it's a crapshoot. The addition of the xieds will richen the low speed mixture and work well with the above combination(cooler running.) A good combination for those want to stay mostly stock but have enhanced sound is :your choice of slipons, xieds and a stock replacement K&N filter.

I have had the Stage 1 download and now have the SERT. If you are happy with the performance when you are out riding and not sitting on the computer reading, then stay with what you have. Unless you are going with a high performance build, run the pipes and equipment you want to run and enjoy the bike being a Harley not a FZF-R1.

Not necessarily so, they address different aspects of fuel delivery.

From http://www.nightrider.com/parts/ied_faq.htm

I have a Vance and Hines Fuel Pak on my bike. Can I use an XIED? Do I need an XIED?

Fuel Pak and IED's have proven to be a very effective combination. Because Fuel Pak is primarily an open loop device and the XiED's a closed loop device, they actually compliment each other. Multiple fuel controllers always has the potential for problems because they can fight for control of the fuel mixture. We always recommend you try to work with your original fuel controller before adding an IED, but the Fuel Pak/XiED combination has proven to be one that is well behaved.

The truth is...... whatever makes most sense to you. There are about a zillion combinations out there. Now to me xied's plus the fuel pak was overkill, if you get rid of those for the HD download your walking ***- backwards into the flames. If your going to change your tune for any reason if even just to spend money then i suggest something with autotune or ,manual tuning with computer such as tts mastertune, so at least if you do any future mods the unit will keep up with your ods and save $ in the long run.

What the hell is "an enhanced" Stage 1? And that was a whole lot to write, when the only question I really got out of it was that you have some popping on decel occasionally, and is it normal, correct? If it's sporadic I'd let it go and ride your bike.

Not trying to be a smart ***, but if you really want to know try this forum.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...-injection-55/

It not something that can be answered in a single thread, but a little research here and you can better make an informed decision for yourself about what is right for you.

Personally I tried the XIEDs and they are a great solution for some. I eventually went with a SEPST, but that might not be right for you.
