I was the proud owner of a 2003 FXDP with 20,000 miles until it was stolen about a month ago. I went to Harley's Demo Day a few days ago and was SORELY disappointed with the neutering of the classic Harley feel and sound of a new Harley. Comparing it to my 2003, the 2012 even with about 600 miles on it just didn't feel right.
I know I may be a bit nostalgic of my old horse, and I realize there's a "break-in" period that a bike needs... But my bike was stock save for my Screamin' Eagle II slip-ons.
Was it really just that "break-in" and slip-ons that gave that FXDP that feel? What are some cost-effective measures I can do on a 2008-2012 FXDF to get it closer to the feel of my ol' 2003?
(Slip-ons/simple breather are fine, but no full exhaust replacement or anything over $300 per upgrade)
Yeah I've considered that. I just really like the Fat Bob look, and buying a used bike that's been under someone else's wrench is not very appealing. Guess I just like virgins too much?
clean out your exhaust, and your sound will improve.... i think they are a bit different now being fuel injected... hit the link for example of sound...
A good tuner & dyno time will get rid of all the EPA restrictions and make a new bike sound and run like it should. 99% of the crappy stock sound and feel of newer bikes is due to the EPA restrictions put on HD. AFRs are lean, breather is restricted, timing is retarded, cats in the exhaust & lots of baffling to keep decibels within limits.
EFI models aren't going to sound like the carburated ones. You can bore out your mufflers for free and get a lot of sound. That might make you feel better about it.
Sad to say but I spent some good money on a ThunderMax programmable ECM and Rineharts partly so I could get my Fat Bob to sound like a Harley. The ECM can adjust the idle so it sounds a little more "carburated". I bought mine slightly used with Screaming Eagles but it sounded like a Honda. That's ok if you have a Honda but, hey this is a Harley!!
Sorry about your loss of the bike. The worst part is feeling like a victim of these thieves.
