Forward controls vs mid controls
I love my mid controls and highway pegs. Maneuvering around tight corners and leaning in the twisties just feels right to me with mids, other prefer forwards.
I suggest riding with forwards before you commit to buying them. My street bob had forwards when I bought it and the previous owner kept the mids and gave them to me when I bought it. Forwards felt weird, especially in a tight lean. I switched them off within a week.

Its sorta a Comfort vs Control thing ..
If your 5'10"+ you may find forwards to be more comfy. However if mid controls are not uncomfortable they do offer more control for high performance precision cornering.
Personally I am 5'9" and I find the mids+hwy peg combo to be perfect because it gives you 2 positions to switch between... being able to move back and forth really helps on longer trips. And you keep the better control of mids when it counts.
I know some will chime in here and say they control their bike just fine with forwards and Im quite certain they do. But for canyon carving mids definitely shine.
... you've never seen a MotoGP or Superbike with forward controls. Just sayin..

To me it seems that a man doesn't ride a Dyna if he dont like to let out her sporty side from time to time. And for the kinda riding...
Forwards feel just fine to me on a Bagger but just No on a Dyna. My FXD had forwards on it when I purchased. After test riding and really liking the bike I made sure the dealer switched it to mids before I took it home.
I am 6'0" and FWDs are the only way for me. I understand the sporty leg position, but I do not have any issues in cornering or control from the FWD position.
If I was racing I would prefer to have my legs under me, but on a Hog I gotta go with FWDs.

I'm 5'10" and really enjoy the fwds on my Fat Bob. Mids don't feel uncomfortable, but one reason I chose the FXDF is the fwd controls.

At 5'10" the mids work well. I actually switched them out to forward controls but they were just to much. I went back to mids and highway bars and it seems to be working fine for me. Although i am interested in the running boards on the switchback. I might build a set for my 07.
I'm 6'3" and run mid controls with highway pegs. That being said, I rode a 2010 FXDWG home for a buddy (3hrs) because he is a new rider and didn't want to ride it back from purchasing it. It was more comfortable but I was scraping my boot heels on corners. I also found that it got tiring only having one place for my feet and got some discomfort after a couple hours. With the mids & highway pegs I love having two foot positions for longer rides.

I'll ride it for a bit more, but I can see me going to mid mount controls with hi-way pegs.
Like said, maybe try and ride one for a bit before you change.
