I have a 98 super glide I have been rebuilding and since I am new to Harley I have some things I am wondering about..
Problems i have really .... bought the bike a few months ago and the bike had been sitting awhile outside . Got the bike looking good and on the road
I have some problems on decell with a back fire when I pick the gas back up... It's been to the local Harley dealer and been jetted and piped but the problem is still there!! Now I notice that the primary housing may be leaking ..... I hear it is normal for the stock gaskets to leak .. Is that true ?? And I can hear the brake pads dragging the rotor when I am free rolling ... Brake caliper sticking or not floating on the pins maybe??... Thanks for any advise you guys may have... Newby
Carbs wear out. How many miles? The butterfly pivots wear and allow for poor gas flow / increased flow. Backfiring could be poorly adjusted timing, dirty carb, bad plugs. Start with fresh plugs and run them for some miles and take them out to "read the plugs".
The brakes? Front or back scrapping? Chances are good that the caliper may be rusted up and not returning when released. If it's the pins one brake pad (inboard / outboard) will be excessively worn. Start by removing the caliper. You may need to back off the pads to slip it off. If you can't see anything reassemble and maybe that'll clear it up or, rebuild or replace the caliper.
Gaskets may be an issue, but simply re-tightening (to specs) may stop the leak. Primary leaks can be deceiving. Wash down the area real well and use a mirror with a shop light to see the point of origination. Outer primary cover easy to replace. Could also be the clutch adjustment cover, chain cover, or the drain plug. Hope it's not behind the inner primary!
You might need to flush your brake lines. Fluid might not be returning to the master cylinder. Take the caliper off and compress the piston with a c clamp. You should see fluid squirt back into the master cylinder with the cover off. Brake seals have a tendency to dissolve and clog things up on bikes that sit a long time.
Well the bike didn't have an odometer when I got it but it was said to have 8000 miles on it !! And it looked really clean all over ! As for the brakes the pad on the piston side of the front brakes showed more wear then the other !! And as far as the leak I can see where it is leaking on top in between the trans and the inner primary cover it just started when I got it back from the dealer after the rejet.... And I have not replaced the plugs but that's next on my list!! I am thinking forward controls so I may take the primary stuff off to get rid of the mid control shifter shaft!!
Thanks for the info guys as this site has really helped !! Thanks again ....
