Years ago here in SoCal (90s), I was not only pulled over for a beanie-type helmet, it was confiscated on the spot.
It was a city cop, not CHP; on a bike even.
The helmet was DOT stickered but not compliant.
I had to go to court over it.
I was left stranded on the side of the road without a helmet. I rode home without one.

As a kid we all had to wear one all the time. Mine was always a Bell 3/4 with one of those flat shields. The laws changed and I still wore it on the freeway trips but not out on back roads. I even crashed a couple times but never got hurt. In modern times I had a big motorcycle with a windshield and gave up wearing helmets altogether.
Now I have a naked bike, so on the freeways it's back to the Bell 3/4. If anyone knows where to get a genuine face shield that snaps on right to these helmets I'd sure like to know. The last two I bought are chinese trash and don't fit right. I'm down to my last one and it's dark tinted for day time.
The old fashioned Bells are out of style, their owners out of luck.
