Just picked up my 1st Harley and after a couple days of riding I noticed it sputters when just cruising at 1/4 throttle occasional. Its an 01 Wide Glide I noticed on the exhaust flange one nut was missing and one stud was replaced with a Allen socket cap bolt which I found finger tight. I plan on replacing the gaskets and installing new studs when I check the cam chain tensioners. Also I plan on changing the plugs and wires. I've already ran through 2 tanks of gas using sea foam so I think I can rule that out. Any other suggestions of what to change or check Thanks in advance
Your dead on exhaust leaks can cause sputtering and exhaust popping plugs and wires too. I wouldn't mess with the jetting unless the things you mentioned didn't fix it assuming it ran fine before you bought it.
Exhaust flange leak will cause a sputter. What about fuel filter. If you just bought it you may want to change it anyway.
Before you purchased the bike how long,if at all,was it sitting for. When oxygenated fuels separate the can gum up a carb, seafoam may help over time, not sure if it will dissolve that gunge up instantly or if it will take some time.
Start with whatever is cheapest first.
Well on a good note my cam chain tensioners are in decent shape but whoever installed the pipes is a piece of crap. They broke a chunk of the cylinder head off and tried holding down the flange with barely 2 threads. For now I'm gonna try to chase the threads and reinstall the pipes until I can afford a new head
