I just replaced my brake cable with a magnum brand. They come with copper washers for the banjo's. The old washers were steel with rubber inside. Is this to stop disimilar metal corrosion, should I buy new washers and replace the copper washers?
Old-time brake mechanics will usually tell you to use the OE banjo washers, as long as they didn't leak before.
While I use to agree with that, I don't anymore. About three weeks ago, I had one that was a little misshaped and couldn't get it to reseat. I tried lightly scuffing it on a stone, but it was dimpled just enough to not reseat. Screwed with it for a while and finally gave up... new ones are cheap.
Sometimes, living out in the boonies can be a bad thing. The next evening on the way home from work, I stopped by a parts store and bought a bunch of spares for the parts drawer.
Banjo bolts are like walrusses... they both like a fresh, tight seal.
My dealership stopped selling the copper washers, and started selling the steel with the rubber, I guess they are reusable? Iv never had problems with the copper ones though.
