Default Rust on front brake line question.

I have noticed that the front brake line on right caliper on my 1988 FLHTC has quite a lot of rust on the exterior at the banjo and where the rubber and steel meet. It seems to me like it could be a safety issue. Is this a common issue? I'd like to replace it sooner rather than later. Where's a good place to buy the hoses for older bikes? I would imagine that I would be wasting my time looking at the dealership for 1988 parts.

It would take a long time for that pipe to rust through but if you are not happy with it just replace it with a braided hose with stainless fittings. They come in black too if you want to keep the bike looking stock.....your dealership or Indy will have them. Goodridge are the most common ones available.

And your brakes will work better!!!

I'm surprised your original pipes have been on the bike this long! The rubber parts of the hose are a likely source of perishing, as well as the metal parts rusting. Just buy yourself a braided set asap. They are available as ready made sets and easy to fit. I think my front is Goodridge, the rear is HEL.

Brake fluid tends to attract moisture ., if you havent changed the brake fluid in the last few years then its probably time to do it now.

That's exactly where it is, under that shrink wrap on the right side. The tubing is OK. The crimp that secures the metal tubing to the rubber has gone to hell, or at least that's what it looks like. The shrink wrap is deformed and it's clearly the steel crimp. I guess I need to cut that part off till I can replace the lines. The front lines are all one piece from the master cylinder to the calipers.

I flushed the brake fluid a few weeks ago so it's clean and new. I really dont think that the line is coming apart any time soon but, I'd hate for it to explode when I need the brakes.

I do want to stay with black lines. If steel braid was cheaper I could do that too. This bikes is for the road, not the show.
