I did some searching and couldnt come up with an answer so here it is. I have a 2012 FXDC and I am either getting horrible gas mileage or my fuel guage isnt working properly. I fill up the tank all the way to the top and the guage doesnt show that its full. Second problem I am getting like 115-120 miles per tank before my guage shows that its deep in the reb but no gas light it on. I dont drive the bike hard at all so this done seem right. I have a screaming eagle heavy breather, V&H side shot exhaust and race tuner.
I'm sure there are much more intelligent riders on here, when it comes to your question, but here's my 2 cents. I have an '11 FXDC with just a stage l a/c and factory download. I have found the gas guage is rather inaccurate and don't pay much attention to it. The bike averages 41/44 mpg overall, and calculate that by fillup fuel usage and mileage.
Have you checked the mileage remaining indicator when the gauge reads red? I have found that it is pretty accurate and is more beneficial when determining how much fuel remains. again just my 2 cents...tomp/dd50
I agree with everyone else. The mileage remaining is much more accurate then the fuel guage. (use the black button on the side of your console to toggle to that mode)
I always hit the reset button on the odometer when I get fuel...that way you can check your mileage if your worried about it.

Actually on the '12 there is no more button on the side of the console/speedo. Toggle thru with the trip button(rocker up on the horn button). I ride mine until the fuel light comes on and the range usually is some where around 35 miles to empty. Filled up this morning when I headed out for a ride, Light came on and range poped up as 32 miles to empty. It took 4 gallons, right on the nose. I had gone 176 miles, and the gas guage was sitting on empty and had been for 30 miles or so. So after that long drawn out speel, I agree with Rooti and Desert. Use the trip meter and the range to empty reading.
I just fill up every 180-200 miles or so, usually about 4 gallons or a little more. I know I could go longer, but I tend to get on the throttle a lot more now since my engine build so I play it safe. I also am usually hitting reserve if I ride too much further
