for my '12 SB, manual says to fill using Octane 91 but I see some folks using higher ctane and I presume this must be when you have Stage 1 like mods? Do you fill tank 1/4 and test out gas to ensure pinging or anything does not happen? And until you find the right octane you fill the tank up. I fear I cannot hear the pinging much so this is why I am asking do I go straight with Octane 91? Also I normally get my truck gas at 7-11...would getting at Sunco be the best to go with a Harley? I cannot think that Sunco and 7-11 have different gas between their Octane rating but hell 7-11 is not a refinery LOL. Thanks for the inputs...
We only have 87, 89 and 92/3 around here. I use 93 and buy it anywhere. Bike runs fine with Sunoco, Shell or 7-11 gas. Just use at least what octane is recommended and don't stress it too much.
I do fill up with the lower octane every once in a while and as soon as I do, I can hear pinging. The computer compensates for is and it's just very light. I also don't get on it hard when it does. I fill up almost daily so sometimes its a mix in there. 91 is almost impossible to find around here, usually it's 93.
I always have run the higher octane. Bike seems to run better.
Also, I try to fill up at Shell or Chevron. Bike seems to like their additives better.
It is your bike, only you will know if it runs great or like crap. I tried using a blended premium that made her sputter and cough, never again.
I have and '06 Low Rider with Stage 1, and my brother has an '06 Road King with Stage 2.
We both use 91 Octane from random brands with great results, i.e. no pinging.
If we're somewhere needing gas and only 87 or 89 is available, we'll fill up and not notice the difference in performance.
One of our riding buds has an '05 Ultra Classic with Stage 2. He uses the highest grade Sunoco pretty much exclusively with great results, i.e. no pinging. He "feels" that his bike runs better so that what he does.
Try 91 octane see how it goes. If no pinging you have your answer.
My local station has 93 octane premium whuch contains up to 10% Ethanol. They also have 90 octane with no Ethanol added (it's near the ocean and people fill there boats up there). Which is better for my bike?
