Default Just bought a dyna and It has no speedo, anyone able to help me put it together?

I posted originally in the wrong section of the forum. So I am asking here.

I just bought this custom dyna with a fatboy fender on it.

I want to do some customizations on it eventually but right now, personally I want to get a speedometer working because its the only thing between me and getting it insured.

So I looked at the wiring harness here

https://www.box.com/shared/i2xtfqrpij

It looks like I need 74420-94 sensor to be able to send a signal to a speedometer.

Anyone know where this is located normally to see if I already have one? Anyone know how to test it electronically? ( multimeter for example )

Anyone have any pointers or suggestion in this endeavor ?
I was thinking about getting this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-David...#ht_500wt_1180
and mounting it on the handle bars

You got any more info about the bike ...?

It does not appear to be a late-model Dyna ... what motor is in the bike (almost looks like an Evo from this side) ...

The '99 and later Dynas have a speedo sensor on top of the transmission ... but, it does not appear that your bike is a '99 or later ...

In fact, it looks like your bike has an oil tank under the seat where the electronics panel is on '92 and later Super Glides ... so, not sure about your setup ...

The earlier models have a mechanical sender that is run off the front wheel and has a cable that runs up between the tank halves and connects to the speedometer ... but, it is a little hard to tell for sure about your bike without further info ...

Welcome aboard ... nice lookin' bike ...

Well, I would start by looking at the VIN to see for sure which model and year you have, then go looking inside the backbone to see if the main harness is intact or has it been modified. Which model will tell you whether you should be looking for a tank mounted dash or bar mounted speedo/warning lights. Looks cool though.

The more I studied the photo, the more I am thinking it is a special construction or a conglomeration of various years parts ...

The frame is an old swing-arm that is not mounted to the transmission like the late-model Dynas or FXR ... I would assume the motor is hard mounted to the frame ... note the old-style rear fender struts ...

Can't quite tell, but from this side, the motor appears to be an Evo ... which would not be 'correct' for the frame era (should have been a Shovelhead) ...

On the other hand, the front brake appears to be '00 or later caliper ... but, the fork tubes don't look beefy enough to be 49mm ... most likely 41mm ... IMO ...

None of this, however, solves the mystery of how is the speedo setup (or could it be setup given the parts) ... even if there is a speedo sensor port on the transmission, it may be of no avail ... I know my sensor is processed through the electronic control module before being sent to my speedo ... and I am dubious that this bike even has an ECM ...

I'd have to consult a wiring diagram consistent with the bike's construction and be able to ascertain the proper vintage of speedo is applicable ...

Here is his post from the softail forum that shows the other side of the bike. I can't figure out what it is. The rocker box covers almost look like sportster covers but the motor is a big twin. I can't tell if it's an HD motor but it has a twin cam a/c cover.

Did the person you bought it from give you any info as to what it was? Does your bill of sale list a model and year? What about the vin, does it start with 1HD? I'm definitley curious about what you're working with here.

Start by buying the service and parts manuals.

At this point you need to get together with the person you bought it from to get some details filled in before any more time goes by. I would also have the serial numbers run to make sure they are not parts off of a stolen bike. Hopefully it's registered as a custom. Something just doesn't seem right...

After reading both this post and the one in the Softail section, the recommendation I would make is to post up in the general section asking about a reputable Independent Harley shop close to where you live. The reason I say this is because we all agree its some form of parts bike. IE, its built from various other motorcycles and bunches of aftermarket parts. Until someone like an Independent shop can look at it in person, we would just be guessing. We know its an Evo style motor, but thats about it. Without touching it in person, theres no telling what year sensors are in it that would function a speedometer.

Call Aaron Tessaro at BlueCollarBikeWorks in new Braunfels, 830-237-3009. He is a master PHD harley certified mechanic and owns the shop. You will have to bring it to him and he will be able to tell you whats up. Tell him Dino sent you and he will fix you up.

@rooti - thanks I will try to call him today.

engine# 5mlr029189
trans# TR174532

I don't mind buying manuals and books and doing the reading, just have to figure out what books / manuals to buy.

Here are the other pictures I have

Thank you all for the responses.

My plan is to take off the fenders and gas tank and paint them myself, possibly a matte black.
