Seriously that is almost exactly what I ended up doing. I had 3 older models to consider ranging from $11,900-$13,000 for one '09 with about 20K miles some mods on it and the 2-'10's had under 9000 miles them. The dealer made me a killer deal on my '12 at $14.8K with a bunch of upgrade parts tossed in at 35% off so in the end of the day that is what I did. One thing I have found is apparently there was a complete wiring harness change after the 2009 and it appears there was also a ECM change as well according to a couple of tuners I have spoken with.
The challenge I have had is that all the references and online service manuals are for the pre-09 models. In addition this change has a lot of the parts guys scratching their heads when it comes to cross referencing which other model connectors will be compatable with the FXDF because the manuals apparently do not break it down to the connector level. This means unless your specific parts guy has seen something used on a 2012 or newer you will be doing a lot of trial and error stuff or sourcing of connectors on your own. Other than that like has been already stated the 103 is worth the difference at least as far as my experience goes.

103 sounds better than 96 for what that's worth. Like others have said I would pick the best deal factoring in year and resale. Also, I may be wrong but I don't think the 02 sensor is wide band, rather these bikes run mostly closed loop and only run in open loop under limited conditions like idle. That's why my sensors are out and I run a PCV for a better AF map.

Buying the service manual and parts book for the bike you own (whatever the year/model) might seem like a lot for a book but it will be one of the best spent $$$ you'll put on the counter. I just looked at Ronnie's and the fiche shows the connectors and terminal housings for each joint in the harness just like they do for all other years. While they might be different than previous years, (don't know if that is the case or not) all you (or any parts man worth a crap) would have to do is compare the p/n's to find out, shouldn't take 5 minutes to find out any question by looking at the appropriate parts book - if your parts man can't work it out perhaps you need to find one with a few more sandwiches in his basket.
The first thing I ordered when I picked up the bike was a Service Manual and parts book - later on when I figured out what direction I was going with the bike I bought the FXDFSE2 CVO parts book because there were parts in there I wanted to add to my bike, I also got the 2012 parts book (I have a 2010) because I wanted to explore what Switchback parts might be compatible with mine - all money well spent. That said it sure would be nice if HD put their parts fiche's online like Yamaha did quite a few years ago but then they wouldn't sell so many parts book so that probably won't happen.
Moral of the story is don't trust the dealers parts man to give you the information you want because many of them don't know thier a$$ from a hole in the ground, others think only the specific original part shown in the book is what fits when we all know that isn't always true, even the really good ones often times don't know the answer but a few minutes comparing p/n's in various books can often tell a lot about what fits and what doesn't.
HD will tell you that the FXDF is the only Dyna model that their stinger wheels will fit but 10 minutes studying the parts book told me that it would fit any 2010+ with the only potential issue being fender clearance - just an example
