Have an '04 FXDL that I purchased a few months ago. Been having some scraping on forward control issues as well as the front end looks low. Thinking about going with +2" fork tubes to bring it up a little. If it is too weird, I'll put on +.5" rear shocks.
I know......why did you get a Low Rider? Newbie....it was advertised as an FXDI and didn't know until I changed the title at DMV.
Checked the trail calculations and currently I have 5.27 and with the +2" it is 5.69. I understand the "reasonable" trail values are between 4-6.
I value any input before I jump in too deep and if you have any photos with a +2" fork....that would be awsome.
Are you sure you have stock fork tubes now?
Adding 2" to the tubes is not a drastic change, will add about 3/4" in height at the front of the frame, or at least mine did, but I was also changing the rake (36 degrees total), so might be different on yours.
Just be sure to thoroughly clean the sliders and internals when you have them apart.
Quick update........ Installed new Progressive springs in stock tubes and it took 5/8" of sag out of the front end. And the front suspension is greatly improved and more responsive. +2" tubes arrive tomorrow. The science project continues. Update and photos to follow. Stand by......
Mission accomplished! The +2" Fork/Slider rebuild went very smooth in < 2 hours. It handles no differently that I can tell. However, the clearance and cornering are greatly improved.
Got them at BKRider.com.....$149 for the set. They also have a secondary bolt on the tube nut that enables you to change fork oil without having to jack the bike or deal wit the springs. Pretty easy for tuning your suspension with the right fork oil.
Final suspension tune with 5W fork oil. The HD Type E (10W) was a little to rigid. Went with the 5w and the dampening is great, cornering is greatly improved, the dive during braking....gone and it handles very well. And....I think the bike looks better! Happy rider
