was going to look at adjusting my primary chain and the shifter peg removal is a pain... i got the bolt out... whats the other trick to getting this thing off.... pull straight off or upshift or downshift it and twist the damn thing off... i don't wanna break anything... didn't think this would be that hard to get off without forcing it
trying to take the whole shift lever off

The shifter SHOULD slide straight off if you have the bolt completely out. You could try putting a straight screw driver in the groove and spread it a little bit. Don't go crazy though......I've seen them split in half before.
i had a problem with the shifter getting loose a 7k miles ago so i locktighted the set-screw and tightened it down really good... i was thinking the same about using a screw driver... out in the garage we go
