I took advantage of the free test rides at a local dealer and tried out a New Road King. The Road King is a nice bike but it felt like I was driving a bus. I don't think it's the bike for me.
My 02 FXDX is my bike and the 07 Ultra is for when the wife goes along. Don't get me wrong I like the Ultra for trips but I love the FXDX for everything else.

I have detachable bags and a Mustang 2-up on the DX. It makes it pretty good on trips with the wife as well. Not an Ultra, but no complaints so far. Might change to a heavier rear shock, but thats about it..
Know what you mean about the FLH...each to their own, but when the FLH riders say there's "no going back" they sound like people going into a rest home or something...permanently banishing themselves to bigger, more comfortable and sedate riding...
Oh,
I have both a Ultra and a FXDX. Both have their place. Try riding the FXDX for 1000 miles in 24 hours sometime. Can be done, but the ultra its much much nicer! The RG Ultra does corner very well. Coming back from the coast yesterday when rode 2 up 65mph on cruise control in 35mph rated turns with ease. It may not be as fast and agile as the FXDX, but it isn't a complete tank.
