Default Shock questions

My bike had Progressive 412's on it when I bought it that promptly puked. I put less than 100 miles on the bikes before I started to hear a clanking sound and had oil running down the swing arm (the shocks had about 6500 miles on them). I removed them and went back to the stock shocks.

My question is, can these and stock Harley shocks be disassembled and can I mix and match pieces? IE, can I use the Progressive coils with the stock Harley shock?

(I called Progressive early on. Because I wasn't the original purchaser of the shock they couldn't replace them under warrantly. I could send them in and they could repair them for between $60 and $300, but they couldn't be sure without seeing the shocks. I don't blame them, there are a lot of people out there trying to get something for nothing. Based on my less that 100 miles on the shocks, I wasn't impressed enough to spend the money to repair them.)

Progressive 440 are a better choice and are not expensive. Forget rebuilding shocks.

"Not expensive" is a relative term. A quick ebay search brought up roughly $400-$650 for a pair of progressive 440's. Considering my first experience with Progressive wasn't that great, I don't think I want to spend that kind of money on what I feel is a gamble.

Those 412's are not meant to be repaired,if I remember correctly. I had 440's for two and a half seasons, paid 425 for them + shipping and handling (got killed on that one) Never liked them no matter how i tried to dial them in. Sold for 200$ bye bye. I went back to my stockers and the ride is actually much smoother. If I ever upgrade again it will be with ohlins shocks from howard at motorcycle metal. Call him up he gives us a break being forum members.
