Again, the difference between the 96 & 103 is not noticeable when comparing apples to apples (stock to stock, stage 1 to stage 1, etc.)
Keep your 96...doing cams or head work or both will gain you a hell of a lot more than going to a 103 and will be loads cheaper.
Again, a lot also has to do with the weight of the bike (weight to power ratio)....a 96 dyna will smoke a 103 touring bike easily due to the weight difference.
My 09 Dyna SB was at 96" with 204 SE Cams, Stage 1 download, PC V mapped with auto tune, SE Heavy Breather AC, V & H short shot pipes. It was at 82 hp, 92 # of tq.
Now it's at 103" with Woods 44 Mag cams, Stage 1 download, PC V same map with auto tune, SE Heavy Breather AC, V & H short shot pipes.
It pulls way harder now with the cam change and bigger bore. I can actually have it in sixth gear and it will pull pretty good.
I haven't had a chance to get it on the Dyno to check the difference in hp and tq yet, but from the seat, it pulls much harder.
I rode them both and there is a noticeable difference. Especially after riding my fatbob 103 for a month, then riding a loaner 96 fatbob while they installed stage 1, i had the bike for 2 days. Definitely could tell the difference, and is worth the money. If you are set on spending a specific amount and never going over, then you can pry make the 96 faster than 103. But you do the same mods to a 103 as a 96 the 103 will walk on it.
