From what I've seen here and in other reviews, there isn't a noticable difference between the two - other than the 103 makes more heat in the factory stock configuration.

Personally, if I get a Dyna this year, it'll be a SGC with the 96" motor. That's plenty for me.

But to each his own, everybody's different and I respect that.

I just did the 103 up grade to my lowrider I had a stage 1 96" and now i have a stage 2 103", I have no idea what the hp's are on the 103 as it still need to be put on the dyno but holy hell the seat of the pants test this motor has way more nuts than before.

Well, since I'm not gonna do a "stage up" that aspect doesn't count for me.

If it doesn't run right and have enough power in stock configuration, then they can sell it to somebody else. No way I'm spending a penny more than the cost to buy it and maintain it. That's what I've done with every bike I've ever owned and so far I've been happy with all of them.

But like I said before, that's just me. Everybody's different.

That's just not true, period. A basic stage 1 103 will not smoke a 96 with a stage 1 + cams and/or headwork. Dollar for dollar, you gain a hell of a lot more by changing cams & doing headwork than you will by increasing the displacement 7 ci.

Apples to apples, yes a 103 will always be more, but the above is comparing apples to oranges..

And those saying the 103 will have better longevity...the 96 & 103 are the exact same motors except for the bore. Otherwise, same motor period. You start getting radical with cams & such and it's going to take the same toll on a 96 as it would a 103.

Would I rather have a 103...yes, who the hell wouldn't, more is always better. BUT, the cost to upgrade could be much better spent on cams & head work that will give you twice the hp & tq gain than the increase in bore will for half the $.

They are NOT the exact same motors... the cylinders are bigger they've upgraded other components like the clutch the valve train, stator and compensator sprocket (stronger) and yes they are going to prove to be far more reliable for upgrades, the 96" engine will be Harley's shortest run motor to date due to the above mentioned. The 103" is the engine they should have come out with in the first place.

Comparing a 96 to a 103 in stock and stage one form will give very similar results. It's only 7 cubic inches however those 7 cubes are huge once you've done some headwork and cams jump into the mix.
If a person has a 96 and wanted to go with a big bore kit only a retard would buy the 103 kit when there are 106/107 kits out there. For basically the same parts cost and labour costs you get more cubes with the 106/107. It's a no brainer. Go as big as you can afford.
I bought my S&S 106 kit off eBay for 550 plus shipping to Canada. Ended up being almost 700 after Canada customs was done with me. To buy the Harley 103 kit And have it shipped from toronto it was 1000 bucks.
So I paid less, for more cubes going with S&S and labour for install didn't change.
S&S also coats the cylinder wall with something to aid in their longevity, instead of boring out your old jugs. I'm very happy with how my bike finished up. And my 106 gets 50mpg highway with 107hp/115tq. Try that with your 103s.

+1 Bingo, All the above confusion resolved. 96"=103" NO, is a 103" compared to 96" like going from a V6 to a V8 in a car NO. The difference between a 96" and a 103" is approx. 7% increase in torque stock to stock which is not that big of a difference. It is a difference no doubt but we are not talking about a pinto to a lambo. We all would have liked to have the 103" vs a 96" I could have waited a few months longer and paid quite a bit more for a 103 but it was just not worth the wait or the awesome deal they gave me on mine vs msrp on a 103" when the first came out.
